A Plan for Real Change

The overarching issue is Illinois's broken politics. A state has principal responsibility for providing the environment of commerce and community in which the people of a state can freely thrive. But without finding some way to stop political money from driving the agendas, it's very tough to get the ideas and advocates to tackle our biggest substantive problems: our threatened infrastructure, struggling mass transit, regressive tax structure, staggered economy, and school financing that pleases few.

As with our national problems, a first step in tackling what ails Illinois is frank admission of the obstacles to progress. Moving forward will require a departure from past patterns of divisive politics, and placing a premium on our interconnectedness; it will also require a departure from short-term shortsightedness, and the articulation of a real vision for Illinois's future. This is a transformational moment in our history, and 2010
should be a transformative election.
